Congratulations on your upcoming move! This is an exciting time in your life, but it is one not to rush. As you prepare to move there are four areas for you to consider.

Plan Ahead of Time

Moving out on your own is a significant life change. It is not something to do in a hurry if you can avoid it. Take time to plan your move to ensure your smoothest transition ever. The first step is getting your friends and family on board with your plan. Let them know your idea and a rough timeline of when you plan to move out.

After letting everyone know your plans, start going through your stuff. Make three piles as you divide things up. The first pile is the stuff you are moving. The second is for things you want to donate or sell. The final, and smallest collection, is stuff to keep at your parents’ house.

Give yourself time to go through your belongings without rushing. Make a list of the items you need for your new place and check them off as you find them.

Scout Out Your New Location in Person

The internet allows us to travel anywhere in the world. There is no better way to get an authentic feel for a location than visiting it. Don’t go downtown where everyone goes. Check out the smaller neighborhoods. Focus on the area around the area where you plan to live. Get to know some of your future neighbors and ask questions! Locals are the best people to learn from when you are visiting a new community.

Labels Are Your Best Friend

As you begin boxing up your belongings for moving or storage, label everything. Use materials that will not rub off. The best way to mark each box is in at least two locations. Put the name of the room where the contents go on the top of the box. On the side, put a full list of exactly what is in the box. Some materials needed for this project include permanent markers, paper, and heavy tape.

Make a Travel Bag for Your Car

As you pack, keep in mind not everything goes into the boxes. Instead, some of your most essential items should remain with you in your vehicle as you travel. Do not pack medications or important paperwork. It is also a good idea to have the contact information for your new landlord and the utility companies. You’re going to want your new address and a few quick outfits in your bag with your travel toiletries.

Make sure your bag has enough supplies to keep you comfortable for at least a couple of days. This way you can unpack as you have time. Ideally, you want to keep your travel bag handy in case you decide to stop on the way to your new location.
